Pradhan Mantri Gramodaya Yojana (PMGY) has been categorized into three parts which includes – Mid Day Meal Scheme, Intergrated Child Development Plan, and Kishori Shakti Yojana. The scheme also include the National Urban Livelihood mission. The scheme called primary education and national nutrition cooperation program was inaugurated on August 15, 1995 with a focus to improve the nutritional level among children, increasing the attendance, maintaining health and interest in the Midday Meal Program.

Pradhan Mantri Gramoday yojana comes under the Swarna Jayanti Shahri Rozgar Yojana. When the India celebrated the Golden Jubliee Urban Employment Scheme, they sponsored the scheme and implemented it in December 1, 1997.

Basically, the scheme called Pradhan Mantri Gramodya Yojana has been integrated into one scheme. The other sections of the scheme which made it one program are as follows –

As we have mentioned earlier that the Pradhan Mantri Gramodya Yojana included the National Urban Livelihood Mission in it. It has been observed that the primary education and national nutrition cooperation program were initiated to enhance the nutritional levels among women and children, along with the improvement in attendance and maintaining the idea of mid-day meal program.

The scheme has been sponsored by the Central Government and was first introduced in 2408 blocks of the country and it is expanding consistently. In the end of 1997-98, the program has been implemented on all the blocks present in the country. In the year 2002, not only the government but the government-aided and local bodies has also extended their hands and increased the number of class up to one to five children of classrooms.

As the name suggests, Kishori Shakti Vikas Yojana has been started with a motive to nurture delicate girl children and provide them health related growth and development from the age between 11 to 18 years.

The program has been started on August 15, 1995 to increase the attendance, retention and presence in the school. Not only that, but the initiative was taken to improve the level of nutrition among the children and this program has been taken under primary education and national nutrition co-operation program.

The program was expanded woth government schools, government-aided and local bodies of schools between one to five children. With the scheme, a grant of Rs. 50 per quintal is given for bringing 100 grams of food grains per child:

  1. Monday – Tuar dal and chickpea gram and tomato curry with rice,
  2. Tuesday – Kheer or halwa along with casserole and potato tomato and potato peas,
  3. Wednesday – gram dal and mix vegetable with rice,
  4. Thursday – Cauliflower with curry and pakoded curry,
  5. Friday – Mung lentils with rice and green or dry gram
  6. Saturday – Mix lentils and green vegetables with salted rice to serve children.

The scheme totally focuses on the health and nutrition, educational information of the children, pregnant women and lactating women below 6 years of age. The scheme has been started in the year 1975 by the Ministry of Women and Child Development (Central Government).

The new changes has been made by the government in order to implement the scheme effectively. The scheme now covers the effective participation and monitoring of services, NGOs for girls belonging to juvenile age group have been reformed.

  • A sum of Rs 2000 crores has been allocated on this scheme in the Union Budget of 2016-17.
  • This scheme is extremely beneficial for women and young children.

As the name suggests, Kishori Shakti Yojana focuses on girls and the objective is to achieve the girl child right. The circle meetings girls have been given a right to cleanliness, home management, nutrition, child rights, and women. The program emphasize on the ability to decide mainly on feticide, dowry, child marriage, gender discrimination etc.

The girls who do not attend school are linked to several other options of education and these girls are provided vocational training so that they can earn livelihood. Regular health treatments and diagnose are being done for these girls at the Anganwadi Centres.
